Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) fought today to bring a much needed boost to American's economy. Convinced that jobs and tax relief go hand in hand in creating a strong and prosperous economy, Brady took to the House Floor to help successfully advance President Bush's Jobs & Growth Act of 2003. H.R. 2 passed the House today by a vote of 222 to 203.
"The best thing we can do to boost the economy is to put a million Americans back to work within the year, and encourage our businesses to invest more right now. Getting the economy moving is also the best way to balance the budget and start paying down our debt", said Brady, who serves on the Ways & Means Committee which has jurisdiction over all federal tax legislation.
"This economic stimulus bill will provide just the spark of capital needed to immediately boost the economy by delivering real tax relief to Americans now.
"Texas will see 42,000 new jobs created annually under this plan. That's almost twice the total number of employees in the Pentagon. Imagine building two Pentagons in Texas every year, and filling them with new Texas workers.
"Small business will be able to buy that new piece of equipment or hire that new employee they need. Families who are building their retirement nest egg will keep more of what they have worked so hard to invest in", notes Brady.
"With so many jobs at risk, we shouldn't wait another day to get this measure to the President's desk."
The Jobs and Growth Tax Act of 2003 benefits every American by:
• Creating over 1.2 million jobs by the end of 2004, over 42,000 new jobs annually in Texas alone
• Increasing the child credit to $1000 for 2003, 2004, and 2005;
• Immediately increasing the total value of the Stock Market by at least $550 billion, the total 11 year revenue estimate of the bill; and
• Injecting $200 billion into the economy to help drive consumer spending and job creation.
With our borders secure, Americans rank the economy as their top priority. Congress should not delay to implement this economic stimulus package. Economic recovery can occur over a matter of months, instead of decades, bringing peace of mind to Americans today.
