Brady STatement on U.S. transfer of power to IraQ

Transfer two days ahead of schedule
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) issued this statement after learning governing power had been turned over to Iraq, two days earlier than anticipated marking the first day of democracy in the nation's history.  The Coalition Provisional Authority turned over authority to the Iraqi interim government led by Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, who will lead the reconstruction of the country until a national election is held in early 2005.

"Today is a historic day for Iraq and the United States.  Today, the Iraqi people will take control of their government and their future by creating a society governed by the tenets of life, liberty and freedom," said Representative Kevin Brady.  "Today’s transfer signals the beginning of a new era in Iraqi history, and sends a message to terrorists that violence and bloodshed will not keep Iraq or any nation from self government and the rule of law."

Today’s transfer of power is also a testament to the dedication of our fighting men and women and President George Bush’s leadership.  Staying the course in Iraq instead of running in the face of terrorist acts brought freedom and self-rule to Iraq and continues to keep our own nation secure.

“Our nation, as well as the Iraqi people, owe a debt of gratitude to the brave American soldiers on the ground in Iraq, and their Commander-in-Chief, President George Bush.  Together, our nation is committed to seeing this War on Terror in Iraq through to the end.  The transfer of power today is a huge step forward in completing our mission in the region and another step toward bringing our soldiers home to a heroes’ welcome.”
