Brady Commemorates National Peace Corp Week and Honors Local Peace Corp Volunteers

Washington, D.C. - In honor of National Peace Corp volunteer week, March 1-7 2004,  U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) recognized and praised the commitment of thirteen area Peace Corp volunteers.

“The Peace Corp program is one of the most effective uses of our foreign aid dollars.  By training people in the developing world and building cross-cultural relationships, American volunteers from every walk of life, are helping to change the world one person and one community at a time.

“In his State of the Union Address on January 29, 2002, President Bush challenged Americans to contribute two years or 4,000 hours of service to their community, the nation, or the world.  It’s exciting to know that citizen ambassadors from across the eighth district are taking up the President’s challenge and volunteering through the Peace Corp and countless other non-profit volunteer programs in our community,” said Brady.

Currently deployed eighth district Peace Corp volunteers are: Kelley Bishop (Niger), Christina Caros (Micronesia), Mary Evans (Kiribati), Thomas Evans (Kiribati), Ann Green (Kenya), Katie Komar (Kenya), Allison Lemon (Kenya), Peter Mittelholzer (Azerbaijan), Jocelyn Muller (Niger), Jennifer Reed (Tanzania), Kevin Rehak (Uganda), Sarah Sampson (Suriname), Courtney Wyly (Dominican Republic).

Approximately 170,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps Volunteers in 137 countries.   Heather Montgomery, Congressman Brady’s district director, and her husband Gary were Peace Corp volunteers in Africa in the sixties.  The well-respected reputation of this organization has been upheld since its inception in 1961, and its important mission – to promote world peace and friendship – remains unchanged.
