Congressman Brady Seeks Applicants for Military Service Academies

High School Students Encouraged to Consider Opportunity,

Application Deadline November 1

Washington, D.C. - Every year, a select number of high school seniors are offered appointments to one of the five military service academies in the United States.  These academies: Air Force, West Point, Naval, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard are premier learning institutions reserved for the most academically motivated and dedicated of students interested in a career in the United States military.

In order to be offered an appointment, a candidate must first be nominated by their U.S. Representative or Senator.  In the case of Congressman Kevin Brady, students residing in the Eighth Congressional District of Texas are encouraged to apply to his office for a nomination.

"These Academies provide students with one of the most competitive college degree programs in the country, and they train America's future leaders.  Military service academies provide students with a premier education and leadership training unparalleled in the world," said Brady.

Students must serve at least five years of active duty and three years in a Reserve Component, a total of eight years, after graduation. The active duty obligation is the nation's return on the graduate's fully-funded, four-year college education that is valued in excess of $225,000.

Applicants in the Eighth District are interviewed by the Service Academy Nomination Board appointed by Congressman Brady to review applicant's qualifications every December.  To be considered for a nomination for the Class of 2011, candidates must have their completed applications (including letters of recommendation, transcripts and test scores) in the Conroe District Office no later than November 1, 2006.

Students interested in applying to one of the military academies should speak with their local high school guidance counselor.  Congressman Brady's office is coordinating service academy information with local high schools through the liaisons listed below and will be meeting with prospective students at many of the schools shown below.  Students can also learn more about the process and download the application at www.house.gov/brady, or by contacting Colby Tiner in our Conroe District Office at 1-877-441-5700.
