Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) today secured $1 million for Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Intelligent Systems Consortium with the passage of the Department of Defense Appropriations Conference Report.  The bill now heads to the President's desk for his signature to become law. 

 

The Consortium is a partnership between SHSU and the United States Navy to produce more efficient ship components. 

 

For the past two years Sam Houston State University and the United States Navy have been working to make Navy ships less costly and more reliable. The project funded today is working to replace steam powered ship hatches, doors, gauges and other components with intelligent shipboard electromechanical devices, in support of the Navy's all electric ship concept. 

 

"Sam Houston State University has proven this program can significantly improve the efficiency and durability of Navy ship doors, hatches, and instruments.  I am pleased that this funding will further their work and strengthen our naval capabilities," said Brady. 

 

Sabin Holland, Director of Innovative and Collaborative Programs at Sam Houston State University responded to the bills passage by saying, "As the lead institution in the Intelligent Systems Initiative research consortium, Sam Houston State University recognizes that this is a major, long term research opportunity for our university. For the past two years we have fostered a close working relationship with our consortium partners and the U.S. Navy to develop goals and ideas that will significantly contribute to improving the performance of operating systems aboard ships.  We appreciate the opportunity to be part of such an important project."
