Local Students Visit Washington, D.C. with Leadership Conference

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady's office today welcomed three students from the Eighth District to Washington, D.C. as part of the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) for high school students.  NYLC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational organization with a mission to foster and inspire young people to achieve their full leadership potential. Through interactions with our nation's leaders these students gain experience and guidance that can't be found in textbooks.

The students attending this spring's session of NYLC are:

  • Caitlin McMullen of Orange, Texas (West Orange-Stark High School)
  • Ashli Cornwell of Lumberton, Texas (Lumberton High School)
  • Nelson Mak of The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands Christian Academy)

"I am always excited to welcome constituents to the Capitol - especially students.  One visit to Washington makes history come alive. You gain an entirely new appreciation for our Founding Fathers and democracy," said Brady.

The group arrived in Washington on Tuesday, September 19 and will return home on Sunday, September 24.

When asked what each of them was hoping to learn from this experience in Washington each students shared a different perspective.

Ashli Cornwell, whose mother is a Deputy Sheriff in Hardin County said she simple wants to learn more about how the process in Washington works.  "This conference is about hearing new ideas, gaining more experience, and having more opportunities open up to you because of what you've been able to learn and apply."  Cornwell is a Junior at Lumberton High School.

Caitlin McMullen whose family is deeply tied to civics and public service, from a Mom who teachers high school government to an Uncle who is a local judge, hopes to one day serve in public service with a lifetime goal of serving on the Supreme Court.  "I've always found politics fascinating," said the West Orange-Stark senior.  "I like meeting different politicians and learn their stances on issues and why."

Nelson Mak who has only lived in the United States six months said this trip was about learning how U.S. Government actually works.  "This conference is about learning how to lead.  You make a lot of new friends and learn a lot about America's government process."  Mak is a Junior at The Woodlands Christian Academy.

Students and teachers interested in visiting Washington, D.C. can visit Congressman Brady's website: www.house.gov/brady  or call 202-225-4901 for more information on tours and services that are available to all constituents.
