Conroe, Texas - After President George W. Bush today pardoned and commuted the prison sentences of 29 pardons convicted felons, U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) expressed his disappointment that the President did not seize the opportunity to commute the sentences of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compeon.
“It is unfortunate and unfair that the President didn’t use this moment to commute the sentences of agents Ramos and Compeon. Even though the appeals process is not yet completed, clearly their sentences were excessive. I believe the President was justified in commuting the unfair sentence of Scooter Libby, and I believe this case warrants his intervention as well. ”
“These agents clearly made mistakes, but enough is enough. These men shouldn’t spend another day in prison. “
In February 2005, Border Agents Ramos and Compeon shot Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila as he was fleeing law enforcement back across the Mexican border after attempting to smuggle 742 pounds of marijuana into the United States. A jury convicted Ramos and Compean of violating federal gun laws and covering up the shooting of the smuggler and sentenced them to 11 and 12-year prison sentences respectively.
