Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-Woodlands) held two roundtable discussions in Livingston and Beaumont with local leaders to discuss his proposal to enhance the Big Thicket and create dynamic new tourism opportunities in the region. The regional roundtables were organized to receive input from local elected officials, economic development and tourism groups, and local chambers of commerce in attendance.
“With the right vision and support, the Big Thicket can become a premier eco-tourism destination,” said Brady. “I believe we can preserve the scientific value of the Big Thicket and grow the local economy.”
Brady has introduced H.R. 5891 to connect, preserve and revitalize the Big Thicket. The proposal would allow for, over time, the addition of up to 100,000 acres to the Preserve and create several family-friendly attractions including tree-top canopy walks, elevated boardwalks and GPS guided water trails.
“I am a strong supporter of private property rights” Brady told attendees. “This proposal only allows the purchase or donation of land from voluntary willing land owners. There is no eminent domain. In fact, this proposal goes one step further and allows land owners to completely opt-out of the proposal by simply writing a letter to the Interior. No questions asked.”
Congressman Brady was able to listen to roundtable attendees as they discussed the economic potential of drawing new visitors to the area and how the proposal impacts local communities.
“I’m reaching out to you to help me make this proposal better. This can be a great economic benefit to the area through increased tourism, and I’m convinced that we can build a plan with regional support, that everyone can be happy with,” said Brady.
