Brady: Congress Set To Deliver Balanced Budget And Tax Relief President Clinton Expected To Sign Agreement

Congressman Kevin Brady announced today that House and Senate conferees have agreed upon final spending and tax bills, with Congress set to make historic votes later this week to deliver to the American people the first balanced budget in a generation and the first real tax relief in 16 years.

"This is an important win for the American people," said Brady. "I was 14 years old the last time we had a balanced federal budget. Finally, Americans will be getting the first balanced budget in a generation, the first tax relief in 16 years, and a solvent Medicare system.

"We’ve worked hard to change the direction of government and to bring the President to where the American people are," said Brady, "and I expect him to sign these two historic bills as soon as we send them to the White House. By holding government programs accountable and forcing Washington to live within its means—the same way the working families of the 8th District of Texas do—we can deliver a smaller and smarter government and much needed tax relief to every taxpayer at every stage of life."

The Taxpayer Relief Act provides relief to more than 40 million middle-income taxpayers with children, helps parents make their children’s dreams come true by easing the cost of higher education, cuts capital gains taxes to promote job creation and economic growth, and helps keep farms and small businesses where they belong—in the family.

"This is the way it should be," Brady said, "Washington working for the American people, not the American people working for Washington. After all, it’s their hard-earned money, and they deserve the freedom that comes with being able to keep more of it."

According the Heritage Foundation, families in Brady’s congressional district will receive an estimated $50,443,800 in tax relief in 1998 alone.
