Rep. Brady Praises Israel’s Knesset Regarding New Extradition LawWashington, D.C. - - U.S. Representative Kevin Brady (08-TX), a member of the House International Relations Committee, was pleased to learn that Israel’s Knesset moved quickly to update an extradition law created in 1978 to prohibit the extradition of all Israeli citizens. “Israel is a true leader within the international community and I look forward to working in conjunction with the Israeli Government to eliminate safe havens for criminals throughout the world,” said Brady. Israel’s controversial extradition policy, which gained recent attention because of Maryland’s Samuel Sheinbein, was revised by legislation passed by the Knesset, in a move to keep the country from becoming a safe haven for criminals. Under the new law, Israeli citizens who are residents of Israel at the time extradition is requested, must be returned to Israel to serve their sentence. However, non-residents will not be given special treatment and will be extradited both for trial and to serve out their sentences. “Thanks to Israel’s actions, criminals now have one less place to hide. Just as countries have updated their trade, human rights, and environmental laws to reflect a changing world, it’s time for the international community to update their extradition laws,” said Brady ### Back Home / About Kevin Brady / 8th District Tour / Press Releases / Constituent Services / Sunset Legislation |
