Brady Protects America’s Values by Supporting Flag Protection Amendment Rep. Brady is a Co-Sponsor of the Flag Protection Legislation Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Kevin Brady today supported House Joint Resolution 33 (H.J.Res. 33), a constitutional amendment authorizing Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States, that passed the House 305 to 124. The legislation protects freedom of expression and the first amendment. There is a difference between conduct and protected speech, points out Brady. “In America, you are free to criticize the school board, but not to desecrate the school; and you are free to criticize city council, but not to vandalize city hall. Likewise, I strongly protect the right of every American to criticize the government, but not to desecrate the American flag,” said Brady. “Too many lives have been lost defending our flag.” Last year, an identical measure passed the House by a similar margin. However, the U.S. Senate failed to hold a vote on the legislation before the 105th Congress adjourned. “I urge the U.S. Senate to pass the legislation during the 106th Congress,” said Brady. # # #
