September 11th Commemorations
Members of Congress honor victims of terrorist attacks
Hundreds of Members of both the House and the Senate gathered on the East Front Steps of the U.S. Capitol to commemorate the September 11, 2001 attacks on America—just as they did ten years ago on the night of the attacks.
Members sang “God Bless America” as part of the Congressional Remembrance Ceremony to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 Americans killed that day. Watch a video of the ceremony.
On September 11th, 2001, thousands of people, including Members, staff and visitors, evacuated the U.S. Capitol and surrounding buildings. Images, reactions and retrospectives from that day have been compiled by the Office of the House Historian and are available online.
