THE FOURTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF MASSACHUSETTS
With a population of about 600,000 people, the Fourth Congressional district of Massachusetts covers 29 cities and towns, stretching from the Boston suburbs of Newton and Brookline to the small communities of Dighton, Westport and Dartmouth, and the cities of Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford.
The Fourth District has a rich and proud history. The city of New Bedford, once a major whaling center, is one of the top grossing fishing ports in the country. Its rich history is commemorated by the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park, which is open to visitors. In Fall River, visitors can climb aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts, an authentic World War II battleship. Foxboro is home to the New England Patriots, who have won three Super Bowls in the past eight years. Newton and Brookline are among the most beautiful suburbs in the country.
The Fourth District has areas of great natural beauty, including picturesque Buzzards Bay and the Taunton River, which was recently designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
The District boasts numerous distinguished institutions of higher education including Boston College, Wellesley College, the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, Babson College, Pine Manor College, and Lasell College.
With its storied maritime and colonial history and unique cultural and ethnic diversity, the Fourth Congressional District is representative of what this great country has to offer.
