Frank Praises HUD Decision to Fund “Green” Public Housing Projects in New Bedford
September 23, 2009
Washington, DC – Congressman Barney Frank today praised the decision by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to award grant money to the New Bedford Housing Authority to help make two of its facilities more energy efficient.
The award specifically designates $1,501,037 for Bay Village, and $986,406 for the Westlawn Housing Complex in New Bedford.
“These funds work in three ways,” said Congressman Frank. “They help improve the quality of our public housing, they help save energy, and they support local jobs.”
In Massachusetts, only the cities of New Bedford, Cambridge, Chelsea and Boston received grants under this program in this round of funding.
The money was awarded as part of the Public Housing Capital Funds program, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the “stimulus” bill. The legislation was strongly supported by Congressman Frank, and it passed the House last winter without a single Republican vote.
See the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for more information about these and other recent grants.
