Flint: Kildee among first to join effort to force vote on campaign finance reform
U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee, D-Flint, helped force a campaign finance reform bill to a vote.
He was the first Michigan congressman to sign on to the discharge petition for the proposal known as Shays-Meehan, which would ban soft money contributions. The discharge petition removes the bill from committee where it could be stalled indefinitely and puts it before the full House for immediate consideration.
The petition nabbed the necessary 218 signatures late last month.
"We have a wonderful opportunity to restore the integrity of our political system by removing the special interests that (have) plagued our system for years," Kildee said.
Soft money is spent by outside special interest groups, not candidates, in an election.
