Kildee, Clifford team up to promote reading as enjoyment U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee and Clifford the Big Red Dog have something in common: reading.
Both the congressman and the children's book character are mascots of sorts for next month's "Get Caught Reading Month," sponsored by the Association of American Publishers and Magazine Publishers of America.
The two posed together last month as part of the national campaign designed to make reading fun. The photo of the Kildee and Clifford might be used in September at the National Book Festival, hosted by first lady Laura Bush.
Kildee actually prefers a bit heavier reading, though. "Freedom from Fear" by David Kennedy is his favorite.
"Aside from reading to achieve academic excellence, we must encourage our youth to read for pleasure and entertainment," Kildee said. "By developing a passion for reading, children will be able to explore their own creativity and imagination."
Celebrities such as Sammy Sosa, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell and Donald Duck have also helped promote the "Get Caught Reading" program.
