| A bill supported by U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee to help the Veterans of Foreign Wars expand its membership won approval in Congress and is now awaiting action in the Senate.
The measure would make members of the armed forces who receive special pay for duty that was subject to hostile fire or imminent danger eligible for membership in the VFW.
Under the current VFW charter, only individuals who served honorably in the armed forces and received a battle medal or served on the Korean peninsula for 30 or more consecutive days is eligible for membership.
The change would allow personnel serving in conflict areas such as Somalia and Kosovo. The measure is supported by the VFW.
Kildee co-sponsored the bill at the request of the VFW, of which his son is a member.
