The first million of $3 million in federal funding has been released to the Flint Mass Transportation Authority to buy new buses and vans. The $1,039,530 goes toward the purchase of five 20-foot replacement buses for transportation of people with disabilities and 10 15-foot passenger vans for curb-to-curb service.
"I am pleased that part of those funds that I helped secure last year are going to be released to help finance immediate improvements in the Flint transit system," said U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee D-Flint.
Kildee requested the funding last year, and his requests were included in the federal Transportation Appropriations legislation for fiscal year 2000.
The rest of the funding is expected to be released soon. The money will help expand the commuting program and develop an automatic vehicle locator system.
