U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee, D-Flint, is urging passage of legislation which would provide emergency higher education grants to unemployed workers.
Kildee introduced the 21st Century Job Opportunities Act this month with U.S. Rep. George Miller, D-California. Kildee's 5th District includes Genesee and Tuscola counties and part of Bay and Saginaw counties.
Kildee is encouraging House Republicans, which hold a majority, to pass the legislation quickly to provide immediate assistance and new job training skills to millions of unemployed workers.
The act would: Provide temporary emergency education assistance for workers who have been laid off, grant financial assistance to cover the costs of tuition and fees for eligible recipients up to $4,500, the maximum Pell Grant award; and provide job training for thousands of workers to help fill the demands of the highly skilled workforce, Kildee said in a news release. |
