| Flint: MTA to receive more than $3 million for improvements
The federal government is giving more than $3 million to Genesee County to fund long-term improvements to the Flint Mass Transportation Authority.
The funding, which is awaiting presidential approval, will buy 20 buses, 10 passenger vans and five handicap-accessible buses as well as expand the commuter program and install an automatic vehicle locator system.
"I am pleased to have worked for dedicated, earmarked funding for transit projects in Flint and Lapeer," U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee, D-Flint, said in a prepared statement. "High quality public transit is vital to our economy and especially to those citizens, such as low-income workers and senior citizens, who do not have ready access to automobiles."
Lapeer Transit Authority will receive $350,000 in new federal funds to purchase new buses.
The funding is included in the federal Transportation Appropriations legislation for fiscal year 2002. Kildee and Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, lobbied for the funding.
