FLINT (WJRT) -- --Another round of federal green job training money was awarded Wednesday -- in all, $150 million.
Two job training agencies in the city of Flint found out they will be receiving a portion of it. Mott Community College has been awarded $3.6 million.
STRIVE in Flint will receive $100,000. It's all federal stimulus money -- part of the U.S. Department of Labor's Pathways Out of Poverty Program.
"The funds are for low-income individuals and individuals who may have been laid off or downsized," said Robert Matthews, executive dean for Workforce and Career Development at MCC.
At Mott Community College, the school will develop a career pathway in green construction.
The pathway will hold everything from entry-level jobs to two-year degrees, according to according Matthews.
"We've been developing curriculum for probably the past year or so," he said.
Matthews says they're even working on a four-year degree program through Eastern Michigan University.
The entire grant program is expected to train 200 students and place 140 people into unsubsidized employment, according to a statement released by Congressman Dale Kildee.
At STRIVE, the main avenues will involve weatherization. Individuals will be taught how to be able to make homes more energy efficient.
Executive Director Jamar Baker says that's how they'll use the $100,000 the Flint office received.
"That will actually serve 150 individuals in this area," Baker said. "We'll look to serve those that need it the most."
Altogether that's training for 350 people in the Flint area. |
