FLINT, Michigan — U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee said today that he believes the U.S. economy and Flint will recover from the current economic downturn.
Kildee, D-Flint, spoke on a wide range of issues to the Rotary Club of Flint during its meeting at the Sarvis Center.
Kildee cited items in the stimulus bill that will directly impact the Flint economy such as the $25 million to shrink the city and the $38 million available statewide to retrain autoworkers.
"I'm optimistic that we're moving in the right direction," Kildee said. "We will come out of (the downturn)."
He also talked about the auto industry, health care and green energy.
A longtime supporter of General Motors, Kildee stood behind the decision to bail the company out.
Kildee gave an optimistic picture of what the Chevy Volt, which will have backup engines made in Flint.
He said he had a chance to drive one recently.
"It's a wonderful car," he said.
Kildee was also optimistic about health care reform. He said a bill could still be passed.
"We're not going to give up," he said. "We should take the best of the House and Senate bills and put something together." |
