Get to Know Rep. Dale Kildee

Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.) — the Cal Ripken of the House — cast his 20,000th vote in the House last week. But Kildee says that, during his 34 years in office, there are two things he’s never done: held a grudge against a fellow member or gone on a codel.

To what do you attribute your devotion to voting?

In 1947, we had the biggest snowstorm; my dad was the only one who made it to his job, and I was the only one who made it to school. Not even the nuns made it! I was told, “Go home, Dale; there’s no school today!” On top of that, the only constitutional description of my job is to vote.

What has been the biggest change in Congress that you’ve seen?

We used to have much more contacts and cooperation across the aisle. Newt Gingrich changed things, and we’ve never gotten back to where they were.

Who’s your congressional best friend?

Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.). John has been very good to me. And we talk about everything under the sun.

What’s your next goal?

To get a good health care bill passed. My goal 34 years ago was to have good health care.
