Mid-Michigan congressional leaders have urged the federal government to immediately step in to stop the spread of Asian carp into the Great Lakes.
Authorities worry the carp could migrate soon from the Chicago Sanitary Ship Canal, which connects the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan.
U.S. Reps. Dale Kildee, a Flint Democrat; Dave Camp, a Midland Republican; and Bart Stupak, a Menominee Democrat, signed a Dec. 8 letter sent to Senate and House leaders.
U.S. Sens. Carl Levin, a Detroit Democrat, and Debbie Stabenow, a Lansing Democrat, and other members of the congressional delegation added their support.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has said more funding is needed to deal with the dilemma. |
