The National Parks Conservation Association has named U.S. Rep. Dale E.Kildee, D-Flint, a "Friend of the National Parks."
The award was first given out in 1999 to several congressional representatives for supporting legislation to preserve the national parks system. Kildee also was honored then.
"This award honors those who stood up to defend the precious places that symbolize our history and our nation's natural wonders," said Thomas Kiernan, the association's president.
The National Parks Conservation Association is the only private, nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated entirely to preserving and enhancing the National Parks System.
