South Jersey to receive nearly $600k in community health center funding

On Friday, March 27, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that nearly $338 million in new federal funding will be invested in community health centers nationwide. This increase in funding, which was made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, has awarded over 1,100 federally qualified health centers throughout the country and South Jersey's share is nearly $600,000. Among those awarded, CamCare Health Corporation and Project H.O.P.E., Inc. have been allocated $456,223 and $119,489, respectively.

CAMCare has provided high quality, comprehensive health care to Camden's medically underserved for nearly 30 years, and they have assisted over 32,000 people in the last year alone. Similarly, Project H.O.P.E. sets out to improve the health and well being of Camden City's homeless by providing medical and social services as an effort to help those in need transition to self-sufficiency. At a time when our nation's unemployment has grown to a 25-year high, more and more people are struggling to meet the rising costs of health care. However, by increasing HHS funding, hundreds of health centers will be able to adequately respond to the high demand of people who are turning to their services during these difficult economic times. Additionally, this boost in funding will also afford recipient health centers with an opportunity to retain, or even expand their staff. In fact, this funding is expected to support up to 6,400 jobs nationally, and South Jersey's portion is expected to add new providers, expanding hours of operations and overall services.

As our country continues face increasing economic challenges, Congressman Andrews remains a leading voice in support of legislation like the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will provide care to an additional 2.1 million patients over the next two years while investing in our community's workforce.
