The issue of illegal immigration and border security is no longer just a concern for states along the borders, it is a problem shared by every state in the country. In town hall meetings and letters and phone calls to the office, I have heard from many Oklahomans who are worried about the effects of illegal immigration on our country, our work force and our economy. It is a justified concern--and one Congress will be working on this year. America is a great country and we always want to be welcoming to anyone that wants to come here legally, but illegal immigration strains our economy and jeopardizes our security.
No one will tell you this will be easy. But as we are debating a comprehensive and improved immigration policy, there are some things that we should keep in mind. First and foremost, in a post 9-11 world, our main priority is the security of our country--and our country can only be as secure as our borders. An improved immigration policy would enforce strict border control methods to help control illegal immigration. This does not necessarily mean new laws--but ensuring the laws already in place are followed.
I also believe an improved immigration policy would include a system that rewards legal immigration and effectively prevents illegal immigration. It should hold law-breakers accountable. A component of this legislation must also address the system that allows businesses who cannot find labor in the United States to temporarily hire foreign workers.
As you know, last year the House passed the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. Although not a perfect solution, I believe this legislation makes a good start on securing our nation's borders. The House and Senate will continue to work on immigration legislation this year, and in the end a compromise will be formed, that hopefully is a bipartisan fair solution.
An improved immigration policy is vital to both the security of our country and the vitality of our economy.
