Larsen Statement on Legacy of Coretta Scott King

Washington, D.C. - Today, members of the U.S. House of Representative will gather to honor the life and accomplishments of Mrs. Coretta Scott King and her contributions as a leader in the struggle for civil right.  U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) released the following statement in tribute to Mrs. King:

“Being only two years old when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the voice of Coretta Scott King was very important to me.  The life of this incredible woman gave me a visual link to the teachings of the civil rights movement.

“We live in a great country, yet we are not without our own challenges.  As we work to address the problems of today, it is important to reflect on the strength and leadership of those who have come before us.  No one exhibited these values more clearly than Coretta Scott King.

“After Dr. King lost his life, Coretta continued his work and dedicated her life to lifting up others.  She reached beyond her own circumstances to fight for the freedom and equality of others.

“It will be an honor to stand with my colleagues today and recognize the gracious leadership and accomplishments of Coretta Scott King.
