Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) released the following statement after U.S Trade Representative Rob Portman announced today that the United States requested World Trade Organization (WTO) settlement consultations with China over the unfair treatment of U.S. auto parts.
“I stand behind United States Trade Representative Rob Portman’s decision to file a WTO case against China over the treatment of U.S. auto parts.
“It is unfortunate that the U.S. has to take this step, but WTO member countries must play by the rules.
“The taxation of imported auto parts in China is an important issue that all U.S. industries that participate in international trade are watching,” said Larsen.
China currently imposes a tax on imported auto parts. This tax results in a cost increase to automobile manufactures in China, discouraging the purchase of the imported parts in the assembly of vehicles. In 2001, China joined the World Trade Organization and committed to limiting its tariffs on imported auto parts to rates.
“I strongly encourage U.S. and Chinese officials to reach a swift, fair and amicable solution. I believe a fair resolution will in the end, be mutually beneficial to both countries,” said Larsen.
Congressman Larsen represents Washington state’s 2nd Congressional District. Larsen is co-chair of the United States-China Working Group in the House of Representatives.
