Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) introduced flood control legislation today in the House of Representatives that would provide additional flood control storage at the Upper and Lower Baker Dams on the Baker River in Skagit County.
“I am committed to helping find a solution for flood control in the Skagit Valley. This legislation should give the citizens of Skagit County assurance that the Army Corps will be there to manage a flood and protect their lives and livelihoods,” said Larsen.
Specifically, the bill directs the Army Corps of Engineers to assume responsibility for operational measures at both the Upper and Lower Baker Dams for “the purpose of providing additional storage for flood damage reduction if the Secretary determines that such measures are practicable and environmentally acceptable”. This precaution would lessen the chance of damage to property and individuals along the Baker and Skagit Rivers. Funds for the Skagit River Flood Control Study complement this legislation.
“After many years of flood control negotiation, this legislation reflects the willingness of everyone involved to compromise for the greater good of the people and property of the Skagit Valley,” Larsen said.
Larsen anticipates his legislation will be referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, of which he is a member. Larsen has been educating his colleagues on the committee about the importance of flood control to Skagit County and the merit of his bill. He is dedicated to moving this legislation forward in the 109th Congress.
