Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (WA-02) announced today that the Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded a $2,668,444 for AmeriCorps education awards to Washington Campus Compact, based at Western Washington University. The grant will go to the Students in Service program at 25 member campuses throughout Washington state. This grant will allow as many as 2,017 education awards for students in order to address unmet needs in local communities.
“Washington Campus Compact’s Students in Service program is improving our local communities and making higher education more affordable for thousands of Washington state students,” Larsen said.
Established in 1992, and hosted at Western Washington University, Washington Campus Compact (WACC) is a higher education presidential membership organization with 25 members throughout Washington state. WACC is committed to providing meaningful experiences for students to become active, engaged leaders in their communities, furthering the civic and public purposes of higher education and strengthening communities. WACC is an affiliate state office of Campus Compact, a national organization comprised of more than 900 higher education institutions committed to the civic and public purposes of higher education.
“As tuition continues to rise, higher education becomes even more difficult to access, especially for those students that need financial assistance,” said Jennifer Dorr, Washington Campus Compact executive director, “The Students in Service education awards can help higher education students meet these growing financial expenses while also encouraging them to address real community needs.”
Participating campuses in Larsen’s district are Everett Community College, Northwest Indian College, Skagit Valley Community College, and Western Washington University.
Larsen said, “I will continue pushing for federal funding opportunities like this one that will benefit students and communities.” |
