WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congress must do all it can to help support the needs of our rural first responders, including continuing to make available critical Federal funds to help equip and train our firefighters and police.
Those were just a few of the issues discussed today at a Homeland Security Congressional Field Hearing that highlighted the needs of rural first responders across the nation. The event was hosted by Congressman Mike Rogers, the Ranking Member of a key Homeland Security subcommittee, and was held at the Auburn University Canine Facility at McClellan in Anniston.
“Our rural first responders are the first line of defense for our communities,” Rogers said. “Congress must continue to do all it can to help support these folks, who sacrifice so much to help protect East Alabama’s rural communities.”
Rogers said he deeply appreciated the support of Congressman Christopher Carney (PA) for helping arrange the hearing in Alabama and for attending the event. He also thanked the first responders from across the Third District for taking time to attend the event.
“Both Congressman Carney and I will continue to do all we can to help support the needs of our rural first responders,” Rogers said. “I deeply appreciate folks from across East Alabama for taking the time to attend the hearing and express their concerns. We are indeed blessed by their service.”
Rogers said those testifying today included the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Dennis Schrader; Alabama’s Department of Homeland Security Director Jim Walker; Jacksonville State University president Dr. Bill Meehan; Mr. John Pearce of the Auburn University Canine Facility; and Mr. Matthew Knight, the Vice President of the Alabama Association of Rescue Squads.
Rogers added, “What we discussed today will be very important for helping Congress do the right thing when it comes to providing support for these folks.”
Rogers is Ranking Member on the Homeland Security Subcommittee for Management, Investigations and Oversight as well as a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Agriculture Committee.
