Washington, DC - Auto racing is an increasingly popular sport and provides a significant boost to East Alabama’s economy, Congressman Mike Rogers said today, as the Saks lawmaker helped pass a joint resolution in Congress recognizing the contributions and history of motorsports in the United States over the past 100 years.
“Alabamians love racing and they’re proud of our state’s legacy in motorsports,” Rogers said today. “I am pleased Congress has recognized this growing sport’s centennial and its great importance to East Alabama’s economy.”
Rogers helped pass H.Con.Res.320, a resolution that “recognizes the importance of motorsports and its evolution over the past century and honors those who have helped create and build this U.S. pastime.” The bill also links motorsports with advances in the U.S. automobile industry, saying auto racing research and development allows consumers to benefit from “improvements [in] safety and technology in automobiles and other motor vehicles.” The bill passed the House unanimously this afternoon by a vote of 414 to 0.
Rogers also cited the importance of the Talladega Superspeedway to East Alabama, pointing out the track’s economic importance to the region. Grant Lynch, Talladega Superspeedway president, agreed and thanked Rogers for his efforts. “Talladega is proud to be part of the great tradition of motorsports,” he said. “Race fans across the South are grateful to Rep. Mike Rogers' leadership and advocacy in getting this bill considered by Congress on the 100th anniversary of auto racing.” The racing season ended this past weekend at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex in Florida.
