Washington, DC - Congressman Mike Rogers praised the House of Representatives today for passing a resolution honoring Rosa Parks, an important tribute Rogers said would help honor the life and legacy of one of Alabama’s most important Civil Rights leaders.
“Rosa Parks is known by many as the mother of the modern-day Civil Rights movement and an inspiration for generations of Americans,” Rogers said. “This tribute is one more way we can honor her legacy, and pay tribute to a woman who has contributed so much to the advancement of our nation.”
Rogers said H.Con.Res.208 passed the House unanimously today. The resolution honors Parks for her role in beginning the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which led to the 1956 Supreme Court decision which banned segregation on transportation in the United States. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
The resolution says Congress should ‘encourage the people of the United States to recognize and celebrate this anniversary and the subsequent legal victories that sought to eradicate segregation in all of American society.’
It also adds that Congress should ‘endeavor to work with the same courage, dignity, and determination exemplified by civil rights pioneer, Rosa Louise Parks, to address modern-day inequalities and injustice.’
“East Alabama has a rich Civil Rights heritage and I am pleased Congress has passed another tribute honoring one of our own,” Rogers said. Parks was born in Tuskegee.
