Ross, Lincoln, Pryor Announce $222,000 For Hot Springs School District

Funding to Support Literacy Program

(Washington, D.C.) U.S. Representative Mike Ross (AR-04) along with Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, announced Wednesday that the Hot Springs School District has been awarded a $222,103 grant from the Department of Education's Literacy and School Libraries Program. The funding will be used to support the school district’s Reading for Early Academic Development project (Project R.E.A.D.) which will serve 1,227 students enrolled in grades K-5 at Gardner Math, Science, and Technology Magnet School; Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School; and Langston Aerospace and Environmental Magnet School.

"It is important that we make every effort to provide our students with the resources and tools needed to succeed in the classroom," Ross said. "The Literacy & School Libraries Program will provide libraries and teachers of the Hot Springs School District with the necessary funding to increase literacy and online resources for our students."

"Reading is the foundation for success in the classroom," said Lincoln. "These federal funds will help put new books and advanced technology right at the fingertips of children who need to develop critical literacy skills. I applaud the Hot Springs School District for investing in a literacy program that will give students the resources they need to reach their fullest academic potential."

"School libraries are a wonderful gateway to imagination and exploration," said Pryor. "However, students are more likely take advantage of these special places if materials and technological resources are up-to-date. This funding is great example of how federal, state and local officials can work together to improve the lives and literacy rates of students within the Hot Springs school district."

The Hot Springs School District’s Project R.E.A.D. will use the funds to purchase library and media materials, extend day programs, and utilize technology as learning and communication tools. The project aims to increase students’ scores in the English Language Arts area of the Arkansas Benchmark Exam.
