Congressman Franks Requests High Priority Funds for Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge

Testifies Before Highways Subcommittee

April4, 2003—Washington, D.C.—Congressman Trent Franks, AZ-02 spoke on behalf of the residents of Bullhead City and Laughlin, requesting consideration for the Hoover Dam Bypass Project in the Reauthorization of the Transportation Act for the 21st Century.

“The importance of this project stems from three concerns: national security, economic impact, and rising accident statistics,” Franks said.

The Congressman went on to describe the Hoover Dam traffic restrictions implemented by the Federal Government following September 11th, discussing how those mandates had affected the communities’ economies and placed motorists at risk. He also cited numerous Arizona newspaper headlines describing severe vehicular accidents involving runaway tractor-trailer trucks.

“I believe the first and primary purpose of the federal government is to protect its citizens.  We have gone to great lengths to regulate traffic across the Hoover Dam for that very purpose.  However, with the restrictions in place, we have placed the citizens of Bullhead City, Arizona and Laughlin, Nevada at grave risk.  The completion of the Bypass Project will serve to alleviate the concerns of local officials and citizens, decrease traffic through these two communities, and ultimately save lives.”
