September 22, 2005—Today, the Rep. Franks (AZ-2) spoke in honor of the Gold Star Mother’s at the United States Capitol. “The mothers of America’s fallen heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice for human freedom, and we owe them the most profound debt of gratitude. More than anyone, they bear the deep emotional burden and loss of those who have laid down their lives for the cause of liberty.” Franks went on to say that “The nation owes these dignified and graceful mothers of freedom our deepest admiration and our promise that the sacrifice of their children will never be forgotten.” Franks will continue to honor the Gold Star Mothers and other military families this weekend as he addresses attendees at this Sunday’s “Support the Troops Rally” to be held on the National Mall:
WHEN: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2005 - NOON to 3:00 P.M. EST
WHAT: RALLY TO HONOR MILITARY FAMILIES
WHERE: THE MALL AT 4TH STREET NW (NEAR THE AIR & SPACE MUSEUM)
www.supportthetroopsweekend.org Franks also supported H.J. Res. 61 in yesterday’s vote Supporting the Ideals of the Gold Star Mother’s Day. The term "Gold star mothers" has historical significance dating back to 1928. Service flags with gold stars were used to show that a family had a son that had died in the service. Mothers of slain servicemen came to be known as gold star mothers.
Gold Star Mother’s Day is marked each year on the last Sunday of September.
Trent Franks is the Congressman from the 2nd Congressional District of Arizona. He is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Judiciary Committee and Vice Chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee.
