WASHINGTON, DC—Today, the House passed H.J. Res. 10, which proposes anamendment to the Constitution that would authorize the Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States. Representative Trent Franks
(R-AZ) issued the following statements after passage:
“The American flag is an enduring symbol of liberty, democracy, and justice. Throughout the history of our country it has been raised as a loving symbol of freedom. Even after the heartbreak of 9-11, our people placed the American flag at the very sites of the tragedy to honor those who had died and as a statement to the world that we - as a people - will never waiver and will continue throughout the ages to fight for the sake of human liberty,” Franks said.
“The flag of The United States of America is a timeless reminder of the profound sacrifice of our nation’s founders and heroes. It speaks hope and freedom to all people across the globe and should be protected for those reasons alone.”
In order to be enacted into law, H.J. Res. 10 will also require an adoption by a two-thirds majority in the Senate, and then ratified by three-fourths of America’s state legislatures.
Trent Franks is the Congressman from the 2nd Congressional District of Arizona. He is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Judiciary Committee and Vice Chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee.
