February 2, 2005—U.S. Representative Trent Franks applauded President Bush for leadership in his State of the Union address.
“As a nation, we are facing generational challenges that require an open and honest debate,” said Rep. Franks. “Thankfully, we have a President who is a principled leader. I truly believe that if we work together, it’s possible to make meaningful progress at home and abroad.”
President Bush opened his speech by welcoming Iraq and Afghanistan into the community of democracies.
“The success of the elections in Iraq presents a clear vindication of the President’s policy in that nation and a magnificent day for freedom in the world” said Rep. Franks. “I think that it is truly amazing that we are witnessing free elections by a people who have lived in bondage and oppression since their country was called Babylon.”
“Confronting and rolling back tyrannies, such as those that existed in Iraq under Saddam Hussein and Afghanistan under the Taliban, and expanding the domain of liberty, will someday defeat global terrorism,” said Rep. Franks. “This year has seen two new democracies join the world community, both of which were midwifed into existence by the efforts of the US.”
The President praised Social Security and called for strengthening it for future generations, saying, “Our children’s retirement security is more important than partisan politics.”
“The President clearly defined the challenges that the Social Security system is facing, and the opportunity that we have today strengthen it for this and future generations,” commented Rep. Franks, “I will not support any reform plan that would decrease benefits for those at or near retirement and I strongly support empowering individuals to take ownership of their retirement through optional personal accounts. In addition to helping individuals create a nest egg for their retirement, personal accounts would prevent Congress from raiding those funds.”
