Representative Franks Condemns Court Decision on Ten Commandments Displays

“Between today’s marked decision on the Ten Commandments and last week’s ruling on Eminent Domain, the Supreme Court seems determined to continue its arrogant and inexorable march to strip the American people of their Constitutional Rights.”

Washington—Congressman Franks today said that the Supreme Court decision to outlaw the display of the Ten Commandments in courthouses only highlights the need for Congress to do something to address judicial tyranny.  Congressman Franks released the following statements.

“Between today’s marked decision on the Ten Commandments and last week’s ruling on Eminent Domain, the Supreme Court seems determined to continue its arrogant and inexorable march to strip the American people of their Constitutional Rights.”

“Courts are meant to interpret laws, not advance a political agenda, but that is precisely what happened today.

“Our Constitution grants America’s citizens three very clear rights: Life, Liberty, and Property.  In back-to-back rulings, the Supreme Court has seriously damaged two of those three rights.

“The very first protections in the Bill of Rights are right to free exercise of religion and free speech.  The Founders understood that religious freedom is the foundation of all freedom.  They sought to prevent an unelected body of elites from determining which ideas and faiths were acceptable in the public square.

“Decisions on when and how displays like this should be made rightly belong with the people and their elected representatives, not to unelected judges.  Both today’s Court ruling and last week’s ruling contradict the very idea that the people have the ability and right to control such things.  It underscores our need to return this power to the people.

Trent Franks is the Congressman from the 2nd Congressional District of Arizona.  He is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Judiciary Committee and Vice Chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee.
