Franks Commemorates 4th Anniversary of Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Sudan

January 13, 2009 – U.S. Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) made the following remarks regarding the 4th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), ending two decades of civil war between Sudan's central government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army in the south of Sudan.

“January 9th marked the 4th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended decades of violent conflict and genocide in Sudan.  Sadly, the peace in Sudan remains fragile as the CPA has not been fully implemented, and has in fact been consistently undermined by the National Congress Party led by President Omar al Bashir.

"I sincerely hope that President-elect Barack Obama is making Sudan a priority as he prepares to take office next week.  If the CPA fails, there will be no peace in any part of Sudan.”

Congressman Franks is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, and the Committee on the Judiciary.
