House Committee on Armed Services Clears Bill to Prosecute Detained 911 Terrorists

Congressman Trent Franks Co-Sponsors and Votes in Favor of “H.R. 6054”

September 13, 2006—The House Committee on Armed Services today cleared, for full consideration of the House of Representatives, H.R. 6054, the “Military Commissions Act of 2006”, which was co-sponsored by Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02).  Congressman Franks remarks on the successful movement of this critical piece of legislation.

“I have been fortunate enough to have been able to co-sponsor this bill that will ensure the prosecution of human civilization’s worst enemies.  I was also privileged to vote in support of it as a Member of the Committee on Armed Services.  Republicans in the House have led the Congress down a path to assure Americans that the U.S. military will seek justice when trying terrorists, some of whom are directly responsible for the 911 attacks as well as the attacks on the U.S.S. Cole.

“The military tribunal will not reward terrorists by treating them as lawful combatants and traditional war prisoners.  They will be tried as ‘unlawful enemy combatants’, meaning they have broken the rules of human civilization.  Five years after 911, we can finally begin to bring these individuals to justice.”

The biographies of the terrorist detainees can be found here.
