Septemeber 5, 2006—Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) praises President Bush’s choice of Mary Peters, as Norman Mineta’s successor for secretary of transportation.
“President Bush was faced with the great responsibility to nominate an individual for the position of secretary of transportation. He made a most excellent choice when he selected Peoria’s Mary Peters.
“Mrs. Peters has been vital to improving Arizona’s transportation system and has dedicated her professional life to improving the safety and fluidity of America’s roads. It is my hope that she will be swiftly and enthusiastically confirmed by my colleagues in the Senate and will demonstrate her outstanding talents and dedication as U.S. Secretary of Transportation.”
Mrs. Peters currently fills a Cabinet seat left open when Mr. Mineta left the position in July. Since November, Mrs. Peters has been national director for transportation policy and consulting in the Phoenix office of Omaha-based architectural, engineering and consulting firm HDR Inc. Mrs. Peters was chief of the Federal Highway Administration from 2001 to 2005. She spent three years directing the Arizona Department of Transportation, where she steadfastly worked for 16 years.
