Congressman Franks Voices Concern
Over Increased Federal Spending

February 4, 2003—Congressman Trent Franks participated in today’s hearing with Mitchell Daniels, Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Mr. Franks, a new Budget Committee Member, and an adamant supporter of a balanced budget, raised his concern over the overall proposed increase in federal spending. “If the fate of the world depended on this Committee and this Congress bringing this proposed budget into balance, what areas of spending reduction would be the most responsible for the Congress to consider?”

Mitchell’s response did not include specific areas, however he emphasized that the current war on terror, the possible war in Iraq, and the economic downturn, were primary reasons for the proposed budget deficit.

“In his budget, the President emphasized this nation’s critical priorities of building a vital national economy and defending our shores against the spectre of terrorism,” Franks said. “Congress now has the grave responsibility of meeting those priorities without damaging the long-range economy by deficit spending.”
