February 11, 2003—Longtime school choice proponent Trent Franks announced his support of the D.C. School Choice bill, introduced by Congressman Jeff Flake (R-AZ).
This legislation, which proposes opportunity scholarships, will not take any money away from the District’s public schools. Seven million dollars—all federal money—will be authorized to improve education for thousands of children, many of whom fall below the poverty line. These students may receive a scholarship of up to $5,000, to be applied to tuition costs at public or private schools throughout the greater D.C. area.
“I am an adamant supporter of any legislation which empowers parents to choose the schools their children attend. Opportunity scholarships are not only what families in our nation’s capitol need, but they are what they deserve. They deserve a quality education, one that choice and competition can provide,” Franks said. “I stand with Mr. Flake, in placing children at the forefront of this issue, and am confident this approach will improve the District of Columbia’s entire public and private educational system.” |
