Congressman Franks Applauds Rescission Bill

Transfer of pork funding may alleviate deficit

March 6, 2003—Today Congressman Trent Franks joined Congressman Jeff Flake in introducing legislation that will transfer pork project funding towards defense and homeland security.

“I applaud Congressman Flake’s strong stand against Congress’ overspending,” Franks said. “As a new member of the budget committee, I have been surprised at the institutional inertia and casual acceptance of the inevitability of a deficit. Many state legislatures like Arizona require a balanced budget amendment. It is a sound practice that should be followed by this Congress.”

“Paying down our debt is crucial and should be our immediate priority. The prospective retirement of the baby boomer generation will place a strain on Medicare and Social Security programs. Adding to that a shrinking workforce, the high cost of homeland security and the war against terrorism, we have no choice but to act aggressively to eliminate our nation’s debt if we are to ultimately avoid complete financial crisis. Pork projects represent overspending. I think Congressman Flakes’ proposed rescission bill is both appropriate and fiscally responsible.”
