WASHINGTON – Today Congressman Dennis Cardoza was pleased to announce that the Port of Stockton has been awarded a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant of $3.2 million to improve port security.

“The recent shutdown of the ramp on highway 580 demonstrates the fundamental importance of our nation’s critical infrastructure,” said Cardoza.  “Security of our infrastructure, especially at the port, is crucial in a world where we need to stay one step ahead of national security threats.”

Port of Stockton Director, Rich Aschieris commented, “The Port of Stockton received every dollar we applied for.  We appreciate the attention DHS has given to security enhancements at the port and the leadership of Congressman Cardoza on this issue.”

The grants, provided by the DHS Port Security Grant Program, will be used for perimeter security enhancements, training port personnel, and information technology security upgrades.

The Port of Stockton was upgraded to a Tier One port by DHS in January.  Tier One ports are identified based on risk as well as the effectiveness of proposed investment by the grant applicants.  Risk to port areas is assessed using a methodology consisting of threat, vulnerability, and consequence factors.
