WASHINGTON – Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, welcomed today a decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to extend the public comment period on its proposed listing of the California Tiger Salamander as a threatened species. A formal announcement in the Federal Register is expected soon.

"The Service now recognizes the far-reaching effects of the proposal on the Central Valley and that every means should be made available to the public to voice their concerns," said Cardoza, who strongly opposes the listing. "We have a duty as a community to make our opinions known while we have the opportunity."

Cardoza believes the listing would have a detrimental economic impact on the Valley and produce minimal environmental benefit for the tiger salamander. He remains skeptical of the scientific basis for the Service’s proposal and feels that the Service has not provided sufficient weight to existing policies and regulatory programs that already protect the species. "The facts simply do not warrant a listing in this situation, nor do they warrant consideration of this species as a national priority under the Service’s own guidelines," Cardoza said.

Local officials joined Cardoza in praising the Service’s decision to extend the comment period.

"We are pleased with this decision by Fish and Wildlife," said Ray Simon, chairman of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. "Congressmen Cardoza and Radanovich should be thanked for their efforts in helping secure this extension. Now we have time to fully explore the ramifications of the proposed listing to the residents of Stanislaus County."

Cardoza is urging constituents to utilize the extension. Written comments must be received by October 31, 2003 at the following address:
