| WASHINGTON – Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, hailed a ruling today by the Fifth District Court of Appeal in Fresno that allows the construction of the UC Merced campus to continue.
The Court of Appeal upheld a lower court’s ruling in favor of the university in a lawsuit filed by three groups that sought to stop development. "I’m proud of UC Merced for asserting itself in the face of frivolous litigation," Cardoza said. "I was completely confident that the university was complying fully with environmental laws, and this ruling simply confirms what we already knew." Cardoza condemned legal sabotage efforts by San Joaquin Raptor Rescue Center, Protect Our Water, and the Central Valley Safe Environment Network, which have since filed other lawsuits in a misguided attempt to derail UC development. "Their abuse of our legal system must be put to an end," Cardoza said. "Hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars have been wasted in defending these lawsuits and numerous additional ones that are still pending." |
