| WASHINGTON – Concerned about the growing demand for water and the inadequacies of existing surface storage, Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, announced today his support for the Water Supply, Reliability, and Environmental Improvement Act.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, would accelerate the creation of additional water storage by allowing new storage projects to proceed once they are determined to be feasible by the Secretary of the Interior, unless Congress objects. The Act aims to keep CALFED, and surface storage projects in particular, moving forward expeditiously. "We needed additional water storage yesterday," Cardoza said. "This legislation goes a long way toward addressing our water supply problems. It provides much-needed balance by making solutions achievable while asserting the authority of Congress to reject bad proposals." The bill includes funding authority for conveyance and flood control projects. Moreover, the bill addresses drainage problems that have plagued the west side of the Central Valley for years. These components of the legislation would greatly benefit farmers and water users in the 18th District.
